Sandy Bay Cottages
This past week, my family and I went on a vacation at Sandy Bay Cottages in Ontario, Canada. We spent seven days relaxing right at the water’s edge in one of their many cabins. I have to tell you, there’s something about listening to the waves hit the shore that resets my soul. The breeze, the sound of the lake birds and the waves, along with just overall lake life relaxes me like nothing else can.
My father and sister joined my family for the vacation. We had many sunny days filled with pontoon rides, quick fishing trips, and car rides into Peterborough to go shopping.
My family has been going to Rice Lake ever since I was in elementary school. While the family dynamics have changed some, (my grandparents have since passed away), it is still an annual trip that I look forward to.

Peameal Bacon

Another part of the trip always includes a visit to the local meat market to pick up some peameal bacon. I do not know much about the origin of peameal bacon, except that it seems to be something known in the Ontario region. It’s pork loin/bacon with an outer layer of cornmeal. We always pick some up to fry during the week, and then also, if it’s available, grab a pound or two to take back home.
We’ve only been back home for barely a week and I’m already looking forward to next year’s trip. If you enjoy fishing and lake life, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Rice Lake.
