Retirement sounds like it’s a long ways off when you are young. You are thinking about a house payment, diapers, and having enough money to buy groceries. The last thing you are thinking about is being at a point in your life where you are done working and will need to have a retirement account. You will have a long list of things that you will think is more important than saving money for when you are old and decrepit.
It doesn’t matter.
Whatever sacrifices you need to do, make it happen so that you can at least contribute enough money into a 401K to match any employer contributions. If you don’t take advantage of it, you will be giving up free money. (Read more about 401(k) matching here.)
If your job does not provide any employee matching for retirement accounts, you still need to save. Too bad.
On top of this amazing wisdom I’m dishing out, I also should inform you that the sooner you start, the better. Compound interest is amazing. You can even ask Siri.
